Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
